true colors

state of the huh?

Well Mr Prez just finished up his State of the Union Address... It didn't really matter what he said, seeing as how anything he wants to do now has to be approved by the Dems. I seldom talk about political views, but I do have opinions about them. My dad is a hardcore Bush supporter, but I personally can't wait till his tirade is over. There are many changes that need to be made, and I am glad that it is not only up to him now. I liked that he touched on some issues that are important to me, such as the energy reforms, but the part that was missing is the HOW that is all going to happen. I can't even talk about it anymore, because it is going to frustrate me, and I just wanna go take some excedrine PM and go watch American Idol!

BTW, I took off the big long post with all the pics, so hopefully the page will load faster now. SORRY!

Twas all a good night

Well what would Christmas be in my family without a lil drama? It is too long and dramatic story, but lets just say that my family almost did not celebrate Christmas this year. It would have been the first time. Although my parents are separated, they have managed to put their differences aside every year at Christmas time. This year things just seemed to get worse and worse, but we still kept hoping that they would forget all that B.S. and just get along! It was not looking too good on Christmas Eve up until about 7pm. There was going to be no holiday dinner, no presents, and no tree. I am not sure how it happened, but I managed to convince my mom that this was not really what she wanted. It took some strong words, lots of tears and some help from God to help me help my family, and bring us all together, but it turned out pretty good! My family has certainly been through a lot, but the bottom line is that no matter what, we will always be there for each other.

Also, this holiday season brought about a very important lesson for someone that is very near and dear to me. I am trying to see the good in this situation, because it could have been a lot worse, and hopefully he will teach other people not to make the same mistake. Sometimes this mistake can cost much more than losing your license, as well as a pretty big dent to the wallet. People die every single day because someone thought they were ok to drive after having one too many. Or in this case, 5 too many... but who am I to judge, we have all been there and done that. All it takes is is one phone call to a friend, family member or cab service, that can save money, time or even a life. Fortunately my little brother is ok, no one was hurt, and he learned a very valuable lesson that for some reason we will probably never know, he needed to learn that night.

On another note! We leave for our New Years trip tomorrow! Jarrett caved and told me on Christmas where it is we are going. Vancouver!!!! and we are also going down to Seattle Monday afternoon for the return flight the following day. So I'll get to see two cities I have always wanted to go to! I know it will be frikkin cold, and rainy as heck, but I am looking forward to it! I have packed about 30 outfits. Just kidding. I am only allowed to bring a backpack and a carry-on bag. (by backpack, I mean a backpacking or camping backpack. ) I am for once going to leave the suitcase at home! I just hope that it all fits ;-p

speaking of which, I need to go finish the laundry, and get to bed. It is a long day ahead of me tomorrow! Our flight leaves at 8:45pm, and I have to work all day! ugh! So I hope everyone has a very fun and SAFE New Year!

Heres to hoping 2007 is full of new and exciting changes for everyone. It is definitely time for some changes.

cock-a-doodle-doo

In 1992, Kauai was hit by a devastating hurricane. During this catastrophe, chicken coops were busted open freeing a large number of decorative farm chickens. There was no way to capture them, and no where to put them in the wake of the storm. They have since taken over the island, breeding with the local game hens, to create a hybrid game chicken that are not good for eating. These chickens were everywhere. The roosters crow at all hours of the day and night, like their internal alarm clocks are all on different time zones. No one seems to mind them though. They have become part of the local charm, and even a symbol of the island itself. People just seem to accept the fact that there is nothing to be done about this bird population, so they learn to love them. The chickens couldn't be happier. I must admit that they are absolutely gorgeous birds.

The lesson? Life hands you chickens... make chicken salad.

Hawaii 2006

There is something amazingly frightening about going away, and knowing that things will probably never be the way they used to when you get back. As in life, you have to enjoy one day at a time, because eventually one of them will be your last. Traveling changes you. Whether it is a relaxing vacation to a tropical island, experiencing culture through a local's eyes, or just a few days to escape the routine that engulfs us all. These experiences teach us to appreciate the little things. Horizons are expanded, and you can't help but return, and look at the world a bit differently.

Hawaii is a consistently evolving, and revolving place. People are constantly coming, and going. Life seems to flow in, on and out of the islands as consistently as the waves that crash upon their shores. People from all over the world come to escape one thing or another. They experience a beauty that is almost indescribable. Waikiki beach, despite the hotels, and thousands of people visiting a day, remains a beautiful place, with clean beaches and crystal clear water. I thought Oahu was a beautiful place, but Kauai knocked me off my feet. As the oldest island, it is home to the wettest place on earth. Mt. Waialeale sees nearly 460" of rain a year. A glimpse of its peak is a rare sighting, as it is almost consistently covered with clouds. They say that this mountain, with 7 rivers running from it to the ocean, is the birthplace for all the water. There are places on this island, that no one has ever seen or touched. This is the stuff that gives me goose bumps. Rising out of the sea 6 million years ago, the "Garden Island" was born. Not a day went by on the island when it didn't rain. And rainbows were an almost everyday sighting.

Our vacation began with me just starting to pack at 10:30 the night before our plane was to take off. I am a fantastic packer. I think my suitcase weighed in at 47lbs... haha! Add the duffel bag, and the backpack, and I think I brought 75lbs of clothes, personal hygene products and food. Thats right, I brought food on my vacation. Just snacky stuff, from trader joes. We also brought a bottle of wine! We landed in honolulu, and got a cab to the pagoda hotel. I thought we were in hawaii... not Japan! As far as I could see, there were no other Americans anywhere! On the elevator ride up to our thrid floor room, the elevator stops somewhere between floors 2 and 3. The elevator doors open, and all we see is a gray wall. Oh this is not good. not good at all. I am going to die in this elevator, before having stepped foot on the beach! Right as I started to panic, I pushed the close door button, and thankfully the elevator lurched, and the doors opened on the correct level. WHEW. It was an old hotel... and we only booked 2 nights, thank goodness. We were in downtown honolulu. MILES away from Waikiki beach. After a bit, we decided to go looking for some dinner. We didn't have a car, so we thought we would walk! It was only about 91°... So we walk. and walk and walk. And then we realize that 91° and 90% humidity is fucking HOT! We are looking for the "Brew Moon" brewery. We have NO idea where we are going. finally we ask a little Japanese lady where it was, and she pointed us in the direction and said it was only a few more blocks. Eventually we found it, and I was half melted by the time we got there, and it only took one look from Jarrett to see that I was just NOT HAPPY. So we ordered some drinks, because that makes everyone happy!

Sexy Alligator

This was my first drink: a Sexy Alligator. It was Chambord, Midori melon, and Jagermeister on the top! Whew... I was feeling pretty good after this drink, but I think I ordered 2 more... can't really remember. So that was our first day in paradise. It did get better, but unfortunately it got worse before it got better.

The second day we took the bus to Waikiki, and spent the day at the beach. The water was absolutely beautiful! There were a lot of people, but we found room. Even though I was not in tip top bikini shape, there were so many people that should NOT have been wearing bikinis, that I looked like Kate Moss in comparison. And I actually felt like I looked good! We rented boogie boards, and tried to catch some waves. It was kind of scary, but fun! On the way back to our hotel, I realized that instead of SPF 50, what I should have used was spf 550! I was burnt to a crisp. Mainly on all the areas that had not seen the sun in ages. So my chest, my back, my thighs, and the back of my thighs. Oh SHIT. basically the next two days I was in extreme pain, but in the end, I got a really nice tan. We checked into our hotel down in Waikiki the next day, and it was SO much nicer. We had an ocean view, and we were right in the middle of things! We went to the beach, walked around, got really drunk, watched TV, went shopping, played glow in the dark 3D mini golf, and went on a snorkel cruise. We ate good food! (The absolute BEST japanese food ever - Tanakas of Tokyo - an award winning teppan style resturaunt, and we were in heaven the food was so good!) and went to the zoo! WE did so many things! Most importantly we had a lot of time to relax! Here are some pics from honolulu:

Booked!

Welp, we are almost all booked up for our hawaii trip.

The first week we are staying on waikiki beach in Honolulu at the Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki. It is just steps from the beach, and within walking distance to the Honolulu zoo! We will probably spend a lot of time at the beach, and I might be tempted to let Jarrett teach me how to surf. If not, boogie boarding is a safer alternative. (We all know what happened when he tried to teach me to ski.)

After the excitement of our first week, we are going to go to Kauai for a much more low key experience. My lovely travel agent love has found us a wonderful guest house on Poipu Beach. It is actually on a banana plantation, and the folks that own it rent out their guest house for a pretty reasonable price. The reviews were all really great, and say that the owners really make you feel at home, bringing fresh fruit and baked goods.

I have a feeling that this vacation will be hard to top.
